    Medicare's coverage on long term care is very limited. Why?


    - After a hospitalization of at least three days and three nights, Medicare will cover a portion of the cost of care in skilled nursing facility for up to 100 days.


    - If the care you are receiving is considered custodial (and 85% of nursing home care is) rather than skilled medical care, then your stay is not covered. No matter what, after 100 days, Medicare stops paying and you must shoulder the expenses now

    Long-term care insurance coverage can vary widely. Some policies may cover only nursing home care and Others may include coverage for a whole range of services like care in an adult day care centre, assisted living, medical equipment, and formal and informal home care.

    This is true, Medicare only provide limited long term care coverage, the very reason why people find themselves with huge debts once they start receiving care. This scenario is unavoidable but only if people have planned for their future and purchased long term care insurance earlier.
