What is self employed health insurance and how do you get an affordable policy?

Health insurance is something that everyone should have, whether you are employed by a large company or working for your self. If you are looking to get health insurance and you are self employed then you still have some options. One of the benefits of working for a large company such as Starbucks is that you don't really have to worry too much about health insurance and they have you covered. However, anyone who is self employed might argue that the perks far out number the draw backs (even though you might not get any benefits). But wait... lets say that you are recently self employed and loving it, but how are you going to get health insurance without spending everything that's in your pocket?

If you are self employed, there are basically two routes that you can go in getting your affordable health insurance policy. Your first option is to obtain individual health insurance directly from an insurance company. The second choice is go with group health insurance, most likely through a trade association or chamber of commerce.

In most cases individual insurance is going to cost you a little bit more money and will require you to do a little bit more research before you can get started with your policy. Individual policies are very broad and you can find many different types to choose from. The best ways to find a health insurance policy that works for you is either to do some research on the internet, talk with an insurance professional or agent, and lastly you can just call up with insurance company and speak with them.

Group health insurance is going to cost you less than individual health insurance. It might be smart to check with your local chamber of commerce or trade group to see if there are some good affordable options. It would not be smart to get some other health insurance before you have done enough research to see what all your options really are. The only main problem with group health insurance is that you do not have as much freedom of choice. The plans are established and you cannot make your own choices as if you were trying to get individual health insurance. So if you go with group insurance, make sure that the plan meets your current needs, not just the low price for your wallet.

Although it would be very nice - to not have to worry about obtaining a self employed health insurance policy, there are some things that you can benefit from in the long run. Lets say that you have a small business and you end up getting employees at some point, you may even turn your business into an incorporated business... Now you have just added the option to get group insurance for your company. Some insurance companies have different definitions of small business and you may need to hire more employees to qualify for their policies. However, this is one case where getting self employed health insurance could end up being more affordable in the future.

If you are currently looking for self employed health insurance, you can start looking by checking out some of the big sites online and get a feel for how much it is going to cost. As with any insurance policy, you want to do the research before you commit to anything. Self employed health insurance is no different, look at your different options and rest assured that if your small business turns into a huge corporation, you will end up having more options. Before you get the plan, make sure it works for you and your family, health insurance is something that you do not want to be without.
