Certain types of links no doubt apply to your statement. But you will not find websites ranking on the first page of Google without back links in high competition keywords.

Could you clarify what does it mean when you say that it applies to 'certain types'?

NAAIP sites have 3 quote engines. Are really good at collecting potential client data. You can edit the sites to your heart's desire. And Free. Pretty silly to try to do it yourself when we give you a better site for free.

Link exchange is not a good strategy in front of Google eyes, you should stop doing that otherwise you will get a penalty.

You can still exchange links, just not direct trades. You shouldn't go like:

    Site A links to B
    Site B lings to A
This is probably a paid link according to Google

But it is better to have:
Site A links to site B
Site C links to site A

Then there are majestic topics to make your website relevant and the content could be the same. As long you don't have links from only 'link spammy' websites and have several natural ones as well you won't have problems with a Google penalty.

If you are looking to build good organic traffic to your site, you should just write good content. Make sure you are posting to your site on a regular basis.
