    Wow, I cannot believe no one answered this question. Basically, if a farmer is self-employed the only benefits available are the ones they purchase for themselves. If the farmer works for a small farm, there is a slim possibility that benefits will be provided. Since we are in a disability forum, a self-employed farmer only gets whatever they purchase for themselves in the way of disability insurance (and yes, it is available from several good companies). An employee could only get disability through the employing farmer if that employer purchases a group plan or if the employee purchases it on their own. So, in short, discussion with an established and knowledgeable insurance and benefits professional (http://www.nahu.org) can only get you better informed and on the way to protecting yourself and your family.
