No medical Insurance

My friend went to the hospital and discovered she had an overactive thyroid. She told the Dr. she had no health insurance but was told, "don't worry about it".She got a bill for $6000.

She's trying to get help with the bill throught he hospital. My question now is, what is the best way, if ant, that she can apply for heath insurance now that she has a "pre-existing" condition? Are they going to jack her up for the costs?

The pre-existing condition will be excluded and she will probably be rated up or declined. It is the old saying "it is too late to close the barn door once the horse is out".

She is going to have a problem now.

Insurance companies are out to make money, not help people. She will definately find companies willing to take her on, but shes going to be paying a premium for it if she wants them to help her with her pre-exsisting.

There are many benefits to what the obama regime will bring in to help this sort of person, but other than that there isn't much hope, all she can really do is cross her fingers and hope that more legislation comes through to help her. Or emmigrate to the UK if it's possible, the UK's NHS would take care of any issues, but if she really needs the care and can't afford it that might be the best method, although I didn't reccomend it :P

She need not cross the pond...just move to Maine or NY both GI states. Not sure how NY works but in Maine she would be guaranteed issue and her pre existing condition would be covered after 1 year. Be aware premiums in Maine and NY are much higher than other states.

Recently some states have set up government subsidized pre-existing condition plans. In my state, MI, they don't have a waiting period for pre-ex and they are about the same price as health insurance for healthy individuals.

Check with the Virginia Insurance Department to see if they have are setting up GI plans.

An overactive thyroid isn't a big deal to most companies. This is a very common condition and many companies will issue a policy as standard risk without as much as a rate increase. Understand that every situation is unique and a variety of factors can influence a carriers decision, but nothing you've said so far indicates that your friend will have an issue getting coverage. Jesse makes a good point. Also to apply for a GI plan your client MAY need to prove she was rejected or had been issued a medical rider. GI plans can be quite expensive so even if she is rated up it may be her best option.

she will probable have to wait for obama care . If she didnt have it before ,it was probable because she couldnt afford it .
